About the Common: Who Cares for Those Who Care?

The December edition of our series About the Common opens the topic of invisible labor — the work most often carried out by women, the invisible pillars of society. These are the women who carry a double load, balancing between work, family, caring for others, and their own survival, often without recognition, support, or rest.

.

On Tuesday, December 9th, at 19:00, at Klara i Rosa (Petefi Šandora 15), we ask: Who takes care of those who care? How do we recognize and value invisible labor?

.

Where does caring for others end, and where does caring for oneself begin?

.

Research by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (2021–2022) shows that women in Serbia perform twice as much unpaid work as men every day. Employed women, after finishing their shift at work, return home to a “second shift” — the kitchen, childcare, eldercare, housework. Such a pace of life leaves a deep mark on women’s mental health, who often live in a constant state of exhaustion, guilt, and pressure to “do everything.”
