On the Common: Between Politics and Life – Migration in Serbia
On Wednesday, April 29 at 6 PM at Klara i Rosa, within the On the Common series, we will address the topic of migration and migration policies in Serbia—what the state plans and which measures it implements.
We will explore these questions from legal and social perspectives in a conversation with Radoš Đurović, lawyer and Executive Director of the Asylum Protection and Assistance Center; Boris Telečki, psychologist; and Isabella Mesaroš Ljubičić, attorney. The discussion will be moderated by Ida Boka from the Volunteer Center of Vojvodina.
Over the past two decades, Serbia has faced complex and intense migration movements. The 1990s were marked by the arrival of refugees from the former Yugoslavia and internally displaced persons from Kosovo and Metohija, as well as the departure of a large number of citizens to Western Europe and North America. In more recent years, Serbia has also been facing the arrival of asylum seekers from Asian and African countries, as well as issues of irregular migration and returns under readmission agreements. At the same time, a continuous trend of rural depopulation is also present.
At the panel, we will discuss state strategies, key challenges, as well as the prejudices and fears that accompany these processes. We will examine current policies and social circumstances in Serbia, and their impact on the everyday lives of citizens.
This discussion is organized as part of the project “Strengthening Serbia’s Response to Migration and Inclusion Challenges,” funded by the European Union and jointly implemented by the Asylum Protection Center, Klara i Rosa, the Volunteer Center of Vojvodina, and Dituria.
