Slavko Ilkić returns to his hometown of Sombor after years spent in Berlin, coming back for a family slava. He leaves behind a failed agency, unpaid debts, and threats from loan sharks, while facing a city and a family that no longer resemble the memories of his childhood. The journey from the bus station to the family home turns into a labyrinth of past and present, filled with conflicting voices—of his father, mother, brother, close friends, and debt collectors who never stop following him. Slavko stands between his father’s authority and his own helplessness, nostalgia and paranoia, the search for refuge and the realization that there is nowhere left to escape.

The Ilkić house gradually turns into a prison, the dining table into an altar of Mammon, and celebration into a grotesque feast without an exit. Berlin and Sombor merge into a single city, a nightclub and a family dining room become one abyss, and Slavko no longer recognizes himself in the mirror—only a sum of faces consuming him. The window of the house looks into the night, but there is no dawn: the first light has already been swallowed by the hungry mouths of a transitional past.

Glorijan is a novel in which family and identity, freedom and debt, bodily desire and guilt are compressed into a dark liturgy of return—a return that becomes a descent into both personal and collective trauma.
