This classic of Francophone theater takes Shakespeare's "The Tempest" as its dramatic template to inscribe a new, decolonial vision of the world into this significant text of European culture. In Sezer's version of "The Tempest," the dramatic conflict between Caliban and Prospero is no longer the clash of an uncivilized monster with a wise European ruler. Instead, it becomes the struggle of the island native against the European colonizer who subordinates everything to himself. This is the drama of Caliban's fight to affirm his own humanity, denied in the establishment of a colonial order. The voices of the decolonial struggle are complicated by the presence of another slave, Ariel. There are many songs of freedom, but does each lead to the true overthrow of the old colonial world? Caliban believes in his song; it is a new tempest.
