ABOUT US
The Klara and Rosa Association was founded on December 11, 2014, on International Mountain Day—symbolically dreaming and calling for change in the flatlands of Vojvodina. Over the years, Klara and Rosa have undergone a long and dynamic journey, continuously evolving and adapting to the context in which they operate. From the very beginning, guided by feminist principles of solidarity, inclusion, and shared decision-making, Klara and Rosa have used art (creativity) and culture as tools for connection, empowerment, and creating a space where different voices can be heard. Through experimentation, exchange, critical thinking, and stepping outside of familiar frameworks, we are constantly redefining our role and purpose within the local community and the wider region.
.
Although the association was founded by a sculptor, a German language teacher, and an actress—women from Subotica—it belongs to everyone. Klara and Rosa are everyone’s and no one’s. The association is open to all who are ready to create change through their actions, while respecting its principles and values. Change first happens within us, and then around us. Truth is not singular, nor complete. It is born in the space between us—in listening, in dialogue, and in the courage to hear and to be heard.
.
Are we ready to create through experimentation—present and awake in the process, persistently nurturing openness, a space free of judgment, a space where we make mistakes because we dare to, without fear? In the practice we build and fight for, no one is “already formed”—we are all in the process of becoming. We are always new, always on a journey, always in the making. And yes—the more diverse we are, the richer we become.
.
Beyond its internal structure, Klara and Rosa embody these values through the spaces they manage and care for. Radio Plac functions as a community radio station that provides a platform for marginalized voices and topics often ignored by dominant narratives. The Courtyard Gallery, the first open gallery in a public space in Subotica, serves as an experimental artistic and activist space open to all. The Civic Cultural Center, opened in January 2023, is a refuge for diverse communities and for all seeking a space for expression and solidarity.
.
Public space particularly inspires us because it belongs to everyone and offers the possibility of unexpected encounters and insights—making art in it both healing and effective, and urgently needed in times of alienation, fear, and polarization.
.
Through our efforts, we are changing both Subotica and the perception of it as a sleepy, stagnant place people want to escape. By creating spaces for encounters, exchange, and art, we prove that this is not the end, but a place of beginning.
We are not leaving—we are staying to create change, to build a different present and a possible future...
